Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Single Student Housing?

Single Student Housing is housing provided to all enrolled students at OSU or NOC Stillwater Campus. The options range from Traditional Community Style Halls to Furnished Two Bed/Two Bath Apartments. To qualify to live in Single Student Housing you just need to be enrolled in at least one credit hour. All students are assigned a timeslot by contract date, so the earlier you complete the online contract—the earlier you will get to go back online and choose your room! When completing an online housing contract, you are applying for a space on campus not a specific room. All rates are quoted per person, and include all utilities (electricity, water, sewer, digital cable, and internet access).

Is there an application deadline for living in on-campus housing?

There is not a set deadline, but we encourage you to complete your contract and pay your deposit as soon as possible. Room timeslots are assigned on a first come, first serve basis after the returning student assignments have been made. The contract process for the Academic Year usually starts the first part of October.  Be sure to check the Housing Events and Important Dates

Are freshmen required to live on campus?

Yes.  Freshmen, defined as those with less than 27 credit hours earned after high school, are required to live on campus.  Exemptions can be made for those that graduated from a high school that is within 30 miles of the OSU campus, married students and students with children (but please keep in mind we have housing for families, including siblings), those that served in the military, and those that are over 21 when classes begin.  The Housing Exemption form can be found on the Forms and Procedures page.

When can I to go online and choose my housing assignment?

Freshmen generally can begin selecting their room assignment at the beginning of April.  Emails with time slots are sent in March and the time slots are based on the date when the student completed their housing contract.  Those that complete the contract later in April may be able to go through the entire process, including room selection.

What is the guest & visitation policy?

Residents are welcome to have overnight guests of the same gender. All Residential Life policies must be observed and guests must be constantly escorted while in a living area. In the case of double/shared rooms, suites, or apartments, prior consent of the roommate, suitemate, or apartment-mate is required. Guests must not infringe on the rights of roommates or of other residents. Guests may not sleep in lounges or living rooms. Guests are limited to three-night visits in an academic year. Visits of greater than three-nights, even with breaks in between or in three other residents' rooms, are prohibited except with permission of the Residence Area Coordinator. Residents, or the guest if a student, could be charged a per night fee if violating this policy. Residents are required to notify the floor/community Resident Advisor when they have overnight guests. In the event of an emergency evacuation of the hall, staff members need to know where guests are located. Visitation is a privilege and all residents of a room/apartment/suite must approve of any guests. If one resident does not desire a guest to be in the room/apartment/suite, then the guest should leave. Guests are not to enter a room/apartment/suite without the resident host of that guest present. Residents are responsible for their guests. Twenty-four-hour visitation is available in halls except Kerr-Drummond and Stout. Residents may have guests visit at any time throughout the day or night with a proper escort. This policy is intended for visitation only and not for overnight stays by the opposite gender. Visitation options within Kerr-Drummond and Stout Halls are: 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 a.m., seven days a week. Guests in all halls must be escorted (in the presence of the person) by a resident of the hall they are visiting at all times, unless otherwise posted. A guest must be hosted by a resident of that hall, and the host/hostess is responsible for informing the guest about applicable University and Residential Life regulations. A guest must not be left unattended by their host in residence hall units. All communities can vote to further restrict this policy. In buildings with common bathrooms, guests who are visiting on a floor of the opposite gender are prohibited from using the bathroom facilities on that floor unless otherwise posted. Each community determines if a bathroom will be open to visitors of the opposite gender during specific times of the day. Under no circumstances is using an opposite genders shower appropriate. Bathroom facilities for guests of the opposite gender are provided in the main lobby or mezzanine areas.

What is the on campus smoking policy?

Oklahoma State University is a tobacco-free campus. Students found using tobacco products in and around all University owned housing will face disciplinary charges and may be removed from the community. In addition, please be aware that residents smoking/chewing in the unit will be charged cleaning/damage costs, if necessary, to remove odor, stains, burns and return the unit to Residential Life standards. Residents will face housing contract termination following a third violation of tobacco-free policy inside the residence halls. A fourth violation will result in adjudication by Student Judicial Services for possible suspension from the University. Students may also be cited by OSUPD for violating the smoke/tobacco free policy.

What type furniture is provided?

In our furnished apartments, furnished suites, and furnished traditional we provide: one bed (extra-long twin or full-size), one desk and desk chair per student, dresser, mirror, closet space/limited storage, mini blinds/café curtain rod, Digital Cable (we no longer provide converter boxes), In-Room Internet Access (some wireless), and full-size refrigerators and microwaves (apartments and suite lounges only). Our unfurnished apartments will not have any furniture except for washer, dryer, stove, refrigerator, and microwave.

How do I make sure that my friend and I are able to room together?

If you aren't sure who you want to live with, you can also participate in the roommate matching process. You select a roommate depending on the matching of your profile questions. Both of you would have to confirm the match before it would be official, and you would come back to this portal to enter in each other as your roommates.

You are not required to choose a roommate at this time. If you do not currently have a roommate preference this step will remain open so you can choose a roommate at a later date. This step is intended for students to request roommates prior to selecting a room. Once you have selected a room you will not be able to assign accepted roommates, unless you click the room change option to left and then go back through the room selection process to see what is available. Remember, all roommate requests must be mutual. It is crucial that the CWID is listed for ALL your roommate choices. That is the only way we have of matching the proper roommate(s) to you and your choices. Important Roommate Assignment Procedure: For example, a student goes online and requests a roommate(s). The requested roommate(s) then goes online and accepts the roommate(s) request. Whoever has the earlier timeslot can then go online and look for a room that has enough empty spaces to assign themselves and their roommate(s). The person with the earlier timeslot will then select the room that has space available and then clicks continue. The next step that pops up if you are accepted roommates would be the option to assign your roommate(s). You would then be able to assign yourself and your accepted roommate(s). If you went online to select a room and you did not have your roommate(s) request accepted and/or you were selecting a room that only had one space available; you would not get the option to assign your roommate(s) because they either have not accepted your request or there was not enough space to assign your roommate(s) to that specific room. Accepted roommates are not automatically assigned to a specific room. If you have already chosen a room and accept a roommate afterwards, you must first change out of the room and then assign your accepted roommate and yourself to the room you choose.

What if I want to change my hall or roommate request after I have already submitted my contract?

As rooms become available, they are added to the portal for selection, so please check back often. If you currently have a room reserved and want to select a different space, you will first have to cancel your reserved room and repeat the process. This is to ensure that students only have one room selected at a time. Revisit the Room Manage process, and click on Change Room. Most of the space available will be in traditional halls which are ideal for freshmen because they promote higher levels of student interaction and provide increased support due to the high concentration of other freshmen students. You can request a transfer to another hall once the fall semester has started. As a returning student next year, you will have priority to select other types of housing in the future.
