By Faculty, For Faculty Panel - Introducing Digital Humanities

Tue, 2018-02-20 15:30
270 Student Union
French Lounge
Tuesday, February 20, 2018, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Many universities now support initiatives organized loosely around the rubric of the "Digital Humanities" or "Digital Studies." These terms refer to a range of interdisciplinary initiatives across the university that combine humanistic and social scientific modes of inquiry with computational tools and methods. OSU has been hosting regular meetings of scholars interested in digital research and pedagogy for a couple of years now. This panel is designed to highlight some of the DH Research already being done on campus, outline resources available to scholars interested in pursuing such projects, and identify undergraduates who might be interested in pursuing an undergraduate certificate in Digital Studies (currently in development). We'd like to expand the pool of OSU faculty and students engaged in such research, including those in the STEM fields who might be interested in collaborating on future projects.
Panelists Include:
Thomas Carlson, Assistant Professor, History
David Oberhelman, W.P. Wood Professor of Library Service, Edmon Low Library
Kevin Dyke, Spatial Data Librarian, Edmon Low Library
Stacy Takacs, Associate Professor of English and Director of American Studies
Jennifer Borland, Associate Professor of Art History and Director of the Digital Humanities Initiative

Mitigating Implicit Bias in Faculty Hiring and Evaluation Processes

Tue, 2018-02-20 12:30
Tuesday, February 20, 2018, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.

Oklahoma State University is a land-grant institution committed to excellence in diversity and inclusion. Components of being a diverse and inclusive campus include the ability to attract diverse pools of faculty candidates and the ability to then retain and equitably promote those faculty members.  Introduced by individuals and through academic policies and procedures, implicit bias is pervasive in the academy and limits the recruitment, retention, and promotion of female and underrepresented faculty members.  Through an NSF-ADVANCE program, faculty from across colleges at OSU have been trained as facilitators to raise awareness of the mechanisms which give rise to implicit bias and to train others in high-impact practices to mitigate its influence.  As a participant at this seminar and panel discussion, you will learn how YOU can use these faculty as a resource to achieve a more equitable environment in your own department.

Hospitality Days Career Fair

Tue, 2018-02-20 09:00
Tuesday, February 20, 2018, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

The School of Hotel and Restaurant Administration in the College of Human Sciences at OSU will host the Hospitality Days Conference on February 20 and 21, 2017. This unique event is celebrating its 61st year. Our Hotel and Restaurant Administration students plan, organize, and implement the event from the beginning to the closing. Originally the conference was a way to bring alumni of the program back to campus to interact with students. Today, recruiters from local, national and international companies attend Hospitality Days to search for new employees and interns. We look forward to our alumni returning to campus and the opportunity to make new friends in the hospitality industry.
