Service Dogs, Emotional Support Animals, Pets

OSU Housing and Residential Life (HRL) values the important role animals can play in the lives of our residents. Pets and support animals can positively impact physical, mental, and social well-being.

To help maintain safe and welcoming communities, HRL has established the following policies regarding service dogs, emotional support animals, and pets on campus.

Required forms should be submitted by email to reslife@okstate.edu.

  • Service Dogs and Emotional Support Animals

Service or emotional support animals (excluding snakes and rats) are welcome on Housing and Residential Life grounds. All necessary paperwork, evaluations, and authorization forms from OSU Student Accessibility Services must be completed and registered with Residential Life prior to the animal's arrival in the residence halls.

Residents who need accommodations for an emotional support/assistance animal will need to complete the Housing and Residential Life agreement form.

  • Pet Friendly Communities

Kamm Hall and Prosser Neighborhood are designated Pet Friendly Communities. Each apartment may have one registered pet.

Pets that may be registered include:

    • Domestic cats
    • Dogs
    • Other animals (excluding snakes and rats), considered on a case-by-case basis

    Guidelines:

    • Only one registered pet is allowed per unit.
    • If multiple residents in the unit request a pet, priority will go to the primary account holder or the first resident to complete housing sign-up.
    • If the first resident declines, the second resident to complete their animal registration will be next to register their pet, and so forth.
  • Pets allowed in all residence halls

Fish, small crustaceans, mollusks, water turtles and small amphibians that live underwater are permitted in aquariums.

    Guidelines:

      • Aquariums may not exceed 10 gallons per housing unit.
      • Multiple aquariums are allowed as long as the combined capacity does not exceed 10 gallons total.
      • Pets must remain in their aquariums at all times.
  • Policies and Responsibilities

To ensure the safety, health, and well-being of our communities, the following rules apply to all animals and pets in university housing:

    • Community Disturbance. Animals or pets causing disturbances must be corrected or removed.
    • Unregistered Animals. Unregistered animals/pets are not allowed in any housing facility due to concerns for health, safety, sanitation, noise, and humane treatment. Unregistered animals must be removed immediately, and the resident will face a minimum $500 fine, plus any additional costs required to restore the unit to an occupiable condition. Repeated violations may result in higher fines and/or removal from housing.
    • Waste Removal. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their animals/pets. A $100 fine will be charged for the first offense, with higher fines for repeated violations.
    • Crating Dogs. Dogs must be crated when the owner is away from the residence, regardless of whether other roommates are present. Crates must be made of wire, wood, or plastic and appropriately sized for the dog. Read: Finding the right size crate for your dog.
    • Liability. OSU is not responsible for any injuries or damages caused by an animal/pet on campus, nor for the care or outcome of an animal/pet once removed.
