Each spring semester, Housing and Residential Life hires multiple student employees to support summer conferences, camps and events. These roles offer hands-on experience in customer service, operations and teamwork while helping create a positive experience for conference guests.

Summer Assistant Job Description

OSU housing and residential life (HRL) desks and conference services provide customer service at the desks for residents and coordinate housing arrangements for camp or conference groups held each summer. The goal of the summer assistants’ staff is to ensure complete customer satisfaction for each resident, camp, or conference group experience.

Duties:

Each summer assistant will be involved in all phases of HRL desk and conference services operation. This position reports directly to the manager of desk and Conference services or appointed conference manager(s). Summer assistants will be responsible for:

  • Run the front desks at Villages and Griffith Community Center
  • Performing camp or conference group check-in and check-out processes
  • Completing pre- and post-conference inspections of residential facilities
  • Providing customer service by facilitating 24-hour service desk duties as needed
  • Assisting with linen management
  • Serving in a 24-hour on-call rotation
  • Completing key preparations and audits
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Commitments:

  • Start date is May 10, 2026, and end date is August 8, 2026
  • Scheduled shifts include:
  • Weekdays, as well as Saturday and Sunday
    • Late evenings, including occasional overnight hours
    • Early mornings
    • University and national holidays that fall during the employment period
    • On-call rotations
    • Must live in the provided on-campus residence hall space and follow all policies
    • Leave requests must be approved by the manager of desk and conference at least two weeks in advance
    • May enroll in a maximum of one course per summer session, more may be considered if classes are offered online
    • Summer assistant Role is the only employment held, unless written approval from the manager of desk and conference

Qualifications:

  • Prior customer service experience is preferred, such as food service or retail
  • Must be in good standing with HRL, OSU, and any related entities
  • Must be enrolled as a student at OSU or its affiliated campuses
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Must attend all mandatory meetings and trainings
  • Follow all HRL and OSU policies and procedures

Compensation:

  • Pay rate is $10 per hour
    • Scheduled hours range from 20 to 40 hours per week
  • One-time payment of $50 to the bursar account for HRL on-campus housing during the time of employment
    • Furnished with all utilities, including cable tv and Wi-Fi
  • HRL is an e-verify employer, and an assistant must pass a background check before the start of employment
