Break Housing Lease

Canceling Registration vs. Breaking Housing Lease

  • Before Occupancy: To cancel your housing registration before you move in, submit the Request to Cancel Housing Registration (form).
  • After Occupancy: If you are already living in university housing and wish to end your lease early, you will need to complete and submit the form below.

What you need to know about breaking your housing lease:

  • Daily Rent Charge. You will be charged a daily rate for each day you had the keys.
  • Early Termination Fee. You will be charged an extra two months of rent, based on the rent for the place you lived in most of the contract. If you are asked to leave because of breaking rules, you will also have to pay this fee.
  • Deposit. Any deposit you paid will be forfeit.
  • Withdrawal from OSU. If you cancel because you leave the university, your deposit will be forfeit.
  • Early Cancellation (within first three months). If you end your contract within the first three months after moving in, you will also pay an extra 25% of the prorated rent charge.
  • No Refund Dates – If you end your contract on or after November 1 (fall semester) or April 1 (spring semester), you will not receive any rent refund.

For information on fines, fees, and charges related to breaking your lease, see Financial Responsibility under “Occupancy.”
