Freshman Residency Requirement

In support of the mission of Oklahoma State University, the Board of Regents requires incoming first-year freshmen to live in university-leased housing. Students—who have not been granted a housing exemption by Housing and Residential Life—attempting to live elsewhere will be required to move to OSU housing and/or will be billed for the full academic year.

About Housing Exemptions

To request an exemption from the Freshman Residency Requirement, submit the form below by the stated deadline. We strive to be consistent and equal when making decisions concerning requests for housing exemption.

We do encourage future residents to complete their housing registration as early as possible since few exemptions are granted. Because of the enrollment deposit of $300, we understand if you would prefer to delay your housing registration until you have been notified regarding your request. However, late cancellation fees may be assessed depending on the timing of your housing exemption request.

Deadline for an Housing Exemption

Tuesday, July 15, 2025, is the deadline to submit your request for an exemption from the Freshman Residency Requirement for the 2025-2026 academic year. All accompanying documents and forms are required by the deadline,

Note: If you are requesting an exemption of the Freshman Residency Requirement because you live within a 30-mile radius of OSU (see reason #1 ), you must submit a Sworn Statement of Commuting Status (form)  along with the Request for Housing Exemption (form) by the stated  deadline.
